Gift of Life’s Community Action Network and Fathers in Action Program partnered with Alabama State University to present the Fathers Matter Men’s Health and Fatherhood Summit on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 9 a.m. -Noon at the new ASU Hornet Stadium.
About 50 attended the event which was promoted heavily in the community using television, radio, flyers and social media. GOL Executive Director Cheryl Davis and Fatherhood Family coach Jessie Yates were interviewed on WSFA-12’s Alabama Live, the highest rated morning show in the market. They also appeared on WKXN-FM and WVAS-FM to promote the event. Media also provided day-of coverage of the event.
More than 21 vendors signed up to participate at the event which offered free health and wellness screenings provided by area health providers; information on community resources for jobs; family and community programs offered by the public school system, parenting programs through Family Guidance of Alabama, and a local church.
The summit included conversations on the importance of father involvement led by an area pastor and licensed social worker, and a question and answer portion where a local attorney answered questions about a father’s rights, child support, custody and visitation.
